slowion2's 2004 Ion 2 Quad Coupe

I'll leave ionit to think of a good description.

That's right, I'm going to try and remember as much of this as possible for you guys and put it all down for I think the first time ever ha. Well, almost all of it down. This will be as chronological as I can make it and basically be a walkthru of the car's life up to present.

Took delivery of the car on December 30th, 2003 with 12 miles on her total. Within the next few days I swapped on my old wheels from my SC2, which were heavy chrome 15x6.5 wheels that weren't awful, but really weren't fitting or all that great. These are the earliest pics I can find at the moment when the car was mainly stock. Yes that is an xtremesaturn.com sticker on the back window, that should show their age.

Within the first 30 days I removed the intake silencer, I want to say even in the first week, just to free up some breathing. For a free modification it was worth the 20 minutes I felt. At exactly the one month mark, the HKS cat-back exhaust system was installed. Great part, which I think is on it's third car now (AC66BRONCO) and still looks great. Rear emblem was also removed early on to avoid it being a hassle later on.

Image

In an effort to change the visual appearance up front (back when I despised amber lights), I masked off the corner lenses, as well as replaced the turn signals/drls with hyper white bulbs.

Image
Image

Underhood looked dull, so I polished up the valve cover.

Image
Image

AEM intake installed shortly after.

Image

Moroso Motorsports Park with Saturn Motorsports. This was back when Lisa Kubo still drove the Ion drag car, which that day consistantly broke 7 seconds and took the win.

Image
Image

Promo shot at Saturn of Port Richey with Lisa Kubo.

Image

In an effort to practice for Nopinationals, some practice night shots of the car.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Nopinationals for that year was a great success, I took 3rd and received an award from GM.

Image

Attempts for black side markers, which did not contrast well at all.

Image

At long last, new wheels arrived. Falken Hanabis in 15x7, 11lbs each.

Image
Image

Polyurethane filled front lower trans mount. Still is in the car today actually and has helped out greatly.

Image
Image

Then, at roughly 12,000 miles, the fun stuff came. Port & polished head that was also milled .045 was installed, along with a crinkle coat valve cover. Credit goes to S.Bretz and Green Monstah for the work, and Scooter for the assisted labor and FSM usage lol.

Image
Image

Breaking the 15.5X mark with stock suspension. Notice the weight shifting under launch.

Image

Eibach springs were installed.

Image
Image

Shortly after that an Nitrous Xpress IcemanXL Single Fogger Wet Kit was installed.

Image

Original purge location.
Image
Image

Cleanup.

Image

SPS strut bar installed.

Image

Somehow got my hands on one of the two prototype Borla cat-back systems for the Ion (03-04 only). These are what later became the Borla and GM Performance exhausts for the Cobalt. Flow was improved over the HKS slightly, but sound was not the same unfortunately. Still, I am very pleased with it.

Image
Image
Image

The one week if that in which I had a set of 17" wheels. They looked ok, but I was not happy at all with the tires and got rid of them. I won't even go into how bad they were under nitrous use.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Exhaust bypass installed at flange for cat-back and downpipe, right after catalytic converter.

Image

Complete OEM underhood conversion performed.

Image
Image

Car was involved in an accident with an intoxicated/impaired driver. These are the only pictures I have on file anymore. The entire rear suspension was destroyed outside of the springs, along with one wheel, and all body panels and mirror on the passenger side. Collision happened from a dead stop with the at fault travelling ~65mph.

Image
Image

LSJ manifold installed (sorry no pics).

First downpipe version installed. 2.5" piping, one bend, bypass installed in place of catalytic converter. (This did not last very long, actually was blown apart during nitrous testing, which led to the 2nd revision)

Image

QTP electric dump installed (no picture). Unfortunately it was damaged and stopped functioning due to flame damage. A new one is on order.

Powerslot rotors with Hawk HPS pads installed.

Image

Image

LED's changed in cluster (yeah not for power but whatever it still happened lol).

Image

6000K HID system installed.

Image

Raptor shift light installed.

Image

Monroe shocks ordered and installed.

Image

1" spring rubbers installed on rear coils to temporarily alter preload.

Image

Coppertop_01 front subframe brace installed. (no pics)

QTP stainless 2.5" exhaust bypass installed.

Image

More will be updated on this later.

Sprint rear coils are on and testing now. So far much more stable than the Eibach rears (which were very soft rate and progressive), and rotation is a lot better as opposed to the "stuttering" I would get before. Will have pics soon.

ha yeah, I had them for like a week total on the car if that. I just didn't care for a wheel that big at the time, but now I wish I would have kept them and put them on for daily, and took my hanabis for track tires, but hey shit happens.

How do you/did you (not sure if you still have it) like that exhaust cutout? I've heard different things about either gaining power or losing power from them. I've been thinking about throwing one in.

I still have it, without the electric motor though. you don't lose power, you lose velocity of your exhaust gas at lower rpm's up until the mid to high rpm range, if not only high revs. I did a run at the dragon with it open and under 4500 it didn't want to move, but once I got to 5000 and higher it pulled fine and felt more peaky. now on the nitrous, it's a gain all around from the added breathing ability (i.e. ability to expel the exhaust at a faster rate with little to no restriction).

if you're sticking to natural aspiration, I don't really suggest it unless it's during all out drag racing only. if you're going nitrous, turbocharged, or supercharged, it will become your best friend in getting the increased volume of exhaust out of the chamber as fast as possible.

Well, it's funny you should mention that... I'm n/a now, but trust me, I've been tossing around the idea of throwing nitrous in the mix for the past year or so. I've been trying to really weigh out the pro's and con's, but it's very difficult because it all depends who you talk to or where you get your information. I would love to give it a shot of juice though.
Is there any downsides to the electric cutout vs. the non-electric other than convienence?

the pros are that you can switch back to lower octane fuel at any time, and not using your system also reduces wear on the car (though there really isn't any intense increases). the cons are going through tires and refill costs lol. I've got about 70k on my car, and 50k of that is with extensive use. if you set your kit up properly, it will serve you well.

the only downside is that some of them do not seal well even at close and might have to be aligned. also, if it does fail open, you have to deal wtih that until you get home. I was lucky that mine failed when it was closed.

honestly, it's a lot of fun with the nitrous. but, if you could get a well designed 4-1 header with downpipe of around 2.5", and a good flowing cat back, it might be more feasible since you'll have more torque area for the bit of high rpm power you're sacrificing. it really depends on where you plan to go with the car. if you want PM me and we can talk about it further.

15.5? lol that was n/a with stock suspension. and actually it was more in the neighborhood of 15.4X @ ~90mph. she traps over 100mph now and the last time slip I actually posted anywhere was I believe 14.4X @ 99.8mph or around that.

I have vids somewhere, need to find them.

i was just wondering, since you never really posted up times(at least that i found) and the only one i saw was 15.5x in this thread. 14s is my goal future goal, going to be gathering parts over the winter and prob be building it up in the spring(or whenever i can use a garage).

like most of these guys will tell you, I don't really like to brag, and it took damn near forever to post up a build info thread of any sort. not everything I have is listed either. a lot of the kills I have are pretty interesting however and puts it in perspective.

if you need help with your build PM me, I'm more than happy to help

Those 6000K HID's look familiar :D

How are you liking the Monroes? Did you do the struts too?

haha I love them dude, they're still running strong. I might put in a set of amber/yellow fogs like Jerry has to contrast and for rough weather.

monroes are great, I"m liking my mixed spring setup too, much more stable and rotation is good (relying more on spring that bar for the rear, long story in terms of suspension geometry and lifting a tire). haven't done the struts, but when these go, I'll be running them up front as well, unless I can find a better solution.
