Reverse Lights (back up lights) not working..

Postby blackion1 » Mon Apr 21, 2008 10:41 pm

hey wondering if Im missing something obvious... I have a 03 Ion 1 5 speed and my back up lights/reverse lights no longer work. Both bulbs are fine and I didnt see I fuse for the reverse lights. Any ideas? Anyone have this problem?

thanks in advance

maybe some type of sensor when you shift to reverse? I have no idea how the reverse lights are activated, but pulling off the shifter bezel and having a look wouldn't hurt.

I know its a long shot - but I'd check the bulbs also. Usually there is nothing to it and typically that sensor doesn't go out. Its seriously would be purely coincidental but check the bulbs. I think the reverse lamp might be the same as the stop lamp in bulb size but don't hold me to that.

Same thing happened to my car. One bulb was bad, then they both stopped working. I replaced both bulbs with new ones, and it took them a while to start working, probably 5 min or so.

actually, if the bulbs are fine, it's most likely the reverse switch on the trans. should be on the trans on the back. you can get to it by jacking the driver side up and removing the wheel, not sure if you even have to take the splash guards out. I went through my first one a while ago though, and I know that it is a somewhat common thing to go out.

Thanks guys, I'm going to take a look right now. Seems like a common problem with the 5 speed Ions, and just like jusdtip took her car into the dealer and the problem started.. same with me. I just picked mine up after getting state inspection.. go figured.

Thanks again

Check the connections too. Mine were loose and I had to bend the connections back in and now they work fine.

Back Up Lights Fixed

Postby blackion1 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 7:26 pm

So long story short-

I removed the Backup Light switch located behind the driver’s side wheel using a 3/4inch Wrench. Make sure its unplugged, Its easily accessible. It was just dirty so I cleaned it with some Carb Cleaner and that’s all she wrote. I also cleaned out all the connections up to it.
Its basically a push button switch, so I pushed it a few times while it was out and made sure the reverse lights came on.

Thanks for all your helps guys.
